Welcome to El Yunque National Forest!

This 28,000 acre tropical rainforest is located on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, in the Sierra de Luquillo, 64 miles southeast from San Juan. It gets its name from the Indian spirit Yuquiyú, that means "Forest of Clouds". It is the only tropical rainforest in the United States National Forest System. It also has over 240 species (26 species are found nowhere else) of trees and plants.

El Yunque is the only tropical rain forest in the U.S. Forest Service system and also the rainiest, with up to 250 inches of rain that fall on the forest per year. Also, 100 billion gallons of water run off the rainforest in a year. It's different from all the other U.S. National Forests because of its year-round tropical climate and immense biodiversity. The strong easterly Trade Winds bring the cool weather and the rain to the forest.
