El Yunque has four distinct layers, starting with the forest floor, then the understory, followed by the canopy, and finally, the tall emergent layer.

The forest floor is very dark due to the amount of trees making an "umbrella" over it. Very few sunlight reaches this part of the rainforest. The rotting of dead leaves and fruit happen here. The animals don't mind, as they feast on anything that is on the floor, including the decaying objects.

The understory is almost as dark as the forest floor, but it has more sunlight. The layer is from the trees that stick up to the canopy. The humidity is high, and the heat is constant, but yet, animals decide to live here. Those animals are mostly small, such as birds, insects, and snakes.

The canopy is the layer that soaks up most of the rainforest's sunlight. You can find most of the rainforest's animals and plants here. Animals mostly make their homes here for the many things to eat, such as fruits and seeds, and a refuge from other animals in lower layers.

It's the top of the rainforest in the emergent layer! It is made up of the tallest trees, that rises above the thick canopy layer. Small animals live here, and there's a lot of sunlight.
